Instrumental Music Compositions

Below I have highlighted some recent non-theatrical works for instruments with and without electronics.

Three Sketchbook Duos for trumpet and clarinet.
These pieces rely heavily on the idiosyncratic instrumental skills of Matt Ingalls and myself.  The score indicates gestural shapes in varying degrees of detail, some fully notated, some indications with which to improvise.

We premiered 2 of the three at the Tuva Space in Berkeley in 2002.  The full set was premiered on the sfSoundSeries on May 31st, 2005.

Patterns of a Wall Expanding for solo violin.
This piece was composed in 2002 for Mark Menzies.  It explores multiple layers of expanding musical and physical gestures.

A View of the Santa Rosa Mountains
as seen from the Borrego Badlands, March 1999
For unspecified instrumental ensemble and improvising duo/trio.
Composed in 1999 and premiered on the sfSoundSeries on October 18, 2004.  Performers negotiate the space between silence and sound through multiple simultaneous interpretations of a visually complex, two-color score.

First performance by Matt Ingalls (clarinet), Christopher Jones (bassoon), David Bithell (trumpet) and Toyoji Tomita (trombone) with John Shiurba (electric guitar), Gino Robair (electroacoustic instruments), and Tim Perkis (computer).
