Technology and New Instrument Design

Much of my work with experimental music theater as well as my non-theatrical music has incorporated various forms of new technology.  I use the Max/MSP programming environment to manage real-time processing of audio and for the synchronization of diverse media.  Most of my technical ability comes from working with Ali Momeni and through UC Berkeley's Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT).

I have also been engaged in an ongoing project between CNMAT and UC Berkeley's Space Science Laboratory to sonify solar data.  We are developing tools to convert multi-channel solar sensor data into sound.  Using CNMAT's SDIF data format -- as well as Spectrogram Image Analysis using Max/MSP's Jitter tool set -- scientists, musicians, and students will be able to interact with this data in enriching and revealing ways.  Some more information is available here.

Check back in the future for links to some of the Max patches that I have created including:
  • Piece-specific patches for the realization of some of my compositions with live electronics
  • Patches for the real-time implementation of classic works for trumpet and electronics (Gaburo's Mouth-Piece, Reynolds' ...the serpent snapping eye, and others)

In addition to computer-based technology, I have been involved in the creation of new physical instruments many of which intersect with computer via CNMAT's ethernet-based Rimas Box interface, IRCAM's AtomicPro, and Eric Singer's MidiTron.   Below is a sampling of some of my work.  Click on the images to find out more.
