I have
focused
my compositional activity on the exploration of the connections between
music, theater, and the other performing arts. At times,
musicians perform highly choreographed physical actions with the
precision of musical timing. Elsewhere, purely musical material
is subverted in ways that make it referential. Binding all of the
materials is a central investigation into the idea of abstract
narrative. The individual actions, sounds, or images may be
abstract but the ways that they change and interact reveal a dramaturgy
that pivots between the comic and tragic.

Technically,
much of my current work involves
traditional and invented acoustic instruments, real-time processing of
audio, and computer-based gestural control of events combined with
video, still images, and spoken texts. I have explored
connections between improvised and composed musics especially through
my work with the sfSoundGroup, an experimental music ensemble of which
I am also co-director, and am interested in the creative potential of
musical transcriptions. |
