Engagement
My
teaching philosophy is grounded in a deep respect for students as
individuals. In many cases, I am led by my students – their
questions
provoke me to critically re-evaluate the relevance and thoroughness of
my teaching. I believe that one of my best assets as a teacher is
my
ability to engender significant interaction with my students.
This is
achieved in part through intellectual faculties, but also through more
human qualities of openness and approachability. In office hours
and
after-class discussions, I have been able to make many great
connections with students – piecing together the course material so
that the student can engage with it on a more individual level.
Technology
I also aim to keep abreast of recent advances in technology and am
always interested in finding ways to incorporate them into the
classroom. I have taught courses taking significant advantage
of web and multimedia technologies for presentation,
documentation, and out-of-classroom participation. In hands on
courses, technology isn’t used so much for presentation, but rather to
allow students to explore and develop their own technological skill
within pertinent digital platforms. Creativity
As
a creative artist, I view the art of teaching and the art of
learning as creative endeavors – developing connections and interacting
with materials in order to make tangible sense of them and to then pass
that knowledge on to students. As a teacher, I aim to transmit an
openness in the studio and classroom that allows students to fully
participate and
interact with the materials being taught as well as instilling in my
students a deep sense of commitment to their art and to their lives.
